Letters, 1862-1865.

The collection consists of twenty-two letters. Most were written between Solomon M. Barnes and his wife Libby. Twenty of the letters include transcripts. There are a few letters to other relatives. The letters between husband and wife discuss family news. Solomon's letters also describe fighting, troop movements, and command changes in his regiment.

Solomon M. Barnes lived in Jay County, Indiana. When he was twenty-four he enlisted as a corporal in the Union Army. He was mustered into Company H, 100th Regiment on 25 August 1862. His regiment left the state in November for Memphis where it was assigned to the Army of the Tennessee. After this it moved on to Alabama and Georgia. In 1864 it joined the Atlanta Campaign. After Atlanta it moved from Savannah up through the Carolinas and Virginia. It mustered out at Washington, D.C. on 9 June 1865...
